This case study presents the MIT Media Lab’s new visual identity, which is the interdisciplinary research laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was designed by Pentagram. In his design approach, Pentagram extended the lab’s former identity by using the same seven-by-seven grid of squares but innovating it by generating individual logos for each of the twenty-three research groups that lie at the heart of the lab’s activity. The new logos represent an interrelated system of glyphs that, on the one hand, establishes a universal identity for the Media Lab and, on the other hand, celebrates its multiple activities.
