The Institute of Patent Infringement is a freely accessible, hackable patent library that is comprised of patents filed by the online store Amazon. Commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut for the Dutch Pavillion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018, the project involved research into the more than five thousand patents Amazon has filed since 2010. These patents were made available online and in an open call, then designers and artists were encouraged to reimagine them. The Institute of Patent Infringement thus manifests itself as the documentation and representation of otherwise abstract information relating to issues about automation and its influence on our future way of living.
